In an exclusive interview yesterday, Mr Packer said he was returning to the board of Crown Resorts after a year in order to make Sydney proud of his casino empire.

Mr Packer said Sydney and the $2 billion Barangaroo six-star hotel and gaming resort would be a central focus of Crown under new Sydney-born-and-based chairman John Alexander.

'One of the company's key priorities over the next few years will be to deliver Crown Sydney on budget and on time,' Mr Packer told The Daily Telegraph from the Colorado ski resort of Aspen.

It follows a tumultuous year which ended with the selldown of a $1.9 billion stake in Crown's Asian operations and the ditching of Mr Packer's long-term ambition to build a casino in Las Vegas. Mr Packer has also been grappling with the implications from the shock October detention of 17 Crown employees on gaming charges.

'My commitment is that Crown Sydney won't be just another hotel, it will be a landmark building for Sydney with a design and quality that the city deserves,' Mr Packer said.

'I want Sydneysiders to be proud of the building, it's why we have worked so hard with our architects.'

On December 23, Crown Sydney passed the final hurdle of a protracted battle when a court rejected a bid to overturn planning approvals.

Crown paid $100 million to secure the licence in 2013 from Premier Mike Baird in exchange for a $1 billion tax guarantee over 15 years.

Underlining the dramatic escalation of the importance of local operations since last year dumping Crown's investment in Alon Las Vegas and selling down the company's Melco Crown stake in Macau to 11.2 per cent, Mr Packer noted the board and management changes he announced on Tuesday were designed to fulfil the local ambitions of its prized assets in Australia.

'John Alexander .. understands the need to deliver a world-class hotel/resort for tourists and locals alike, while ensuring Crown Sydney is a rewarding project for shareholders and the company,' he said.

'Our new management changes will help us deliver these goals.'

Mr Alexander has held key executive positions for the Packer empire for the past decade. He orchestrated Mr Packer's exit from the family's magazine and TV assets at peak value in 2006.

Mr Packer will be spending a lot more time in Sydney, after basing himself in Israel for much of last year. He still owns a Bondi Beach unit, outside which he famously had a punch-up with his good mate David Gyngell. Mr Alexander had visited the apartment the following morning to counsel Mr Packer over the incident.

Mr Alexander declined to comment on his appointment yesterday but said in a statement on Tuesday: 'Crown Resorts is and will remain one of Australia's most valuable tourism assets.' He said he wanted to build the wagering and online business and would work to deliver 'world-class facilities and services to customers and guests'.

Crown's competitor The Star Entertainment also has plans for a new luxury hotel, with a $500 million Ritz Carlton across the water at its Pyrmont site due to be completed in the same year as Crown Sydney, in 2021.

How Much Does Crown Casino Make A Year 2019

HIS first movie project was the blockbuster Gravity, and now 2016 may just be the year James Packer came back down to earth.

It was when the $5 billion gaming tycoon cleared the decks of distractions: He sold off $1.8 billion worth of Macau casino assets, ditched plans for a casino in Las Vegas and broke up with Mariah Carey.

And he dealt with the implications of 17 employees being detained in China in a corruption crackdown on illegal gambling promotion.

Whether Packer in hindsight believes it was a mistake to resign from the Crown Resorts board 12 months ago and spend much of the year in Israel, he is not saying.

But by returning to the board and appointing long-term trusted advisers in key positions — while ridding the company of more risky, less understood assets — Packer is telling investors things are about to change.

Make no mistake, of all the plans he's had and deals he's executed — many of them motivated by personal ambition — there is no deal he personally wants more than a 75-storey luxury hotel and gaming resort at Barangaroo.

Sydney is his family home, and it's where his father and grandfather made the family rich through media and formed the basis of his $5 billion fortune today. Yet he currently has no business here. Only when his Barangaroo project is done will he feel his own man in business, away from the shadow of his father.
